Writing the Short Story

When: Wed., May 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m. 2014

What makes a good short story? And, for that matter, how does one write a short story? In this course, we’ll read and discuss a variety of short stories – past and present – to develop a better understanding of the short fiction form. We will discuss the unique challenges and opportunities relevant to the short story writer, and contextualize our readings within the broader discipline of writing. In addition, we will read and workshop each other’s stories, employing textual analysis and discussion to help our work be the best that it can be. Do you love a good short story? Have one sitting around that needs that little tweak? Or perhaps an idea that’s not quite fit for an entire novel? This class is for you.
