Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace will hold its annual Hiroshima-Nagasaki candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 8. The vigil is a public statement of peace and the importance of nuclear disarmament on the 71st anniversary of the US bombing of Japan with atomic weapons. The vigil will be held in the Avon traffic circle, Routes 5 & 20. BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO

County unions will hold a rally to draw attention to their expired contracts; of the eight county government unions, only two have active contracts. One of them is the sheriff’s office road patrol deputies’ union, and that contract was imposed by an arbitrator.

The rally is at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, in front of the County Office Building, 39 West Main Street. It precedes the monthly County Legislature meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. BY JEREMY MOULE
