Michael Lasser has been discussing this topic for thirty years as a study of popular music as social history, specifically about the America these songs reflect. With the sharp economic decline of the 1930s, the music of the decade also took a decidedly gloomier turn, which included popular songs about social unrest and unemployment that echoed the everyday feeling of most American citizens during the Great Depression.
