The Italians of Greater Rochester: Their Contributions to the Community and the Nation, by Edward Maruggi, PhD. Early Italian arrivals to the United States began their new lives as manual laborers in eastern cities. Rochester was no exception. As enclaves grew, immigrant's maintained strong ethnic ties with family and relatives whole involving themselves in a new and very different way of life.
