The master blaster on the steel guitar, Robert Randolph, frequently blows his own lid on stage. Once he and The Family Band get chugging, Randolph's hat flies off. I've seen him three or four times, and it happens every show. I'd say it was a calculated move if the same thing didn't happen to me every time I've seen him. Much like his mentors, The Campbell Brothers, Randolph slays his demons after they've danced around the stage for a spell. His instrument's tone is slick and sanctified. Hold on to your hat.
Robert Randolph plays with Luke Wade, and Danielle Ponder and the Tomorrow People on Thursday, April 20, at Anthology, 336 East Avenue. 8 p.m. $25-$30. anthologylive.com; robertrandolph.net.
