POP | The Modern Electric

comment

If you're looking for something a little different before diving into the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, you might want to check out pop band The Modern Electric at Sticky Lips BBQ. The Cleveland-based quartet is ready for its own prime-time as it creates ambitious, hook-driven pop music slightly reminiscent of bands like Spoon but with a piano-guitar balance. Lead singer-guitarist-pianist Garrett Komyati is a fine vocalist that delivers his lyrics in a mix of poise and passion. The songwriting starts with Komyati, but his band takes the skeletons and turns them into full-bodied songs worthy of speaking straight to your heart. I'm obsessing over The Modern Electric's self-titled debut album. You will too.

The Modern Electric performs Thursday, June 19, at Sticky Lips BBQ Juke Joint, 830 Jefferson Road. 9 p.m. No cover. Stickylipsbbq.com; Themodernelectric.com.
