As a Modern Lover, he penned one of my favorite tunes, "Roadrunner." As a solo artist, he's cracked me up half a dozen times or so. Jonathan Richman accompanies himself not so much as a songwriter than as an adroit storyteller strapped to a guitar. Throughout the course of a set, he'll move from obscurities, like Ronnie Dawson's "Rockin' Bones," to his own songs about dancing at lesbian bars and taking the bus. It's David Sedaris meets Simon and Garfunkel.
Jonathan Richman plays Saturday March 10, at Skylark Lounge, 40 South Union Street. 10 p.m. $18-$23. abilenebarandlounge.com; jonathanrichman.bandcamp.com.
