Latin Americans know "Tierra Mestiza" as the name of a traditional folk song. Music fans are increasingly recognizing it as the name of an excellent duo whose repertoire is at once ancient and contemporary: guitarist Omar Tamez and pianist Angelica Sanchez. Tamez is an expressive guitarist but he also plays a wide variety of instruments ranging from nose flute to thumb piano (mbira). Tamez's one-man orchestra is nicely contrasted and complemented by the gorgeous, almost classical piano style of Sanchez.
"Tierra Mestiza," featuring Omar Tamez & Angelica Sanchez, plays Saturday, August 18, at Bop Shop Records, 1460 Monroe Avenue. 8 p.m. $15 general; $10 students. 271-3354; bopshop.com.
