After graduating from the Eastman School of Music, drummer John Hollenbeck moved to New York in the early 1990's and began his ascent in the jazz world. He paid his dues with Bob Brookmeyer, Fred Hersch, Meredith Monk, and others, and established The Claudia Quintet and a large ensemble unlike any other. Aside from Hollenbeck's distinctive avant-garde-leaning arrangements, the ensemble features 20 of the top players on the New York scene, including Tony Malaby on sax, Kermit Driscoll, bass, and Theo Bleckmann, voice.
The John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble performs Tuesday, October 20, at Kilbourn Hall, Eastman School of Music, 26 Gibbs Street. 8 p.m. $20-$30. 454-2100; eastmantheatre.org.
