With laidback charm and plugged-in strum, Brooklyn's Drew Taylor is textbook indie rock minus the excessive effort usually made by those who crowd the idiom to capacity. Gently electrified, the music lilts loose beneath Taylor's casual, strident tone. But this ain't an indie "look-at-my-shoes" snooze fest: there's hope and a Velvet Underground twinkle in there as positive by-products. Joining Taylor on this bill is garage rock innovator Aweful Kanawful; Thunder Body frontman Matt O'Brian and his new project, The Great Blue Herons; Doe; and The Professor spinning between sets. And if that's not all, the night will serve as an art opening featuring abstract paintings by Christopher Maley and the abstract wood carving of Cory O'Rourke, a video installation by Frank Bacon, and a new mural by Dip Dripper. So much sonic and visual goodness for your eyeballs and earballs.
Drew Taylor plays with Aweful Kanawful, Matt O'Brian and the Great Blue Herons, Doe, and The Professor on Friday, April 7, at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue. 10 p.m. $7. bugjar.com; drew-taylor.bandcamp.com.
