Groups team up for RTS meeting

Several advocacy groups will hold a Reimagine RTS "Meeting in a Box" from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday
at the Worker’s United Building, 750 East Avenue.

Reimagine RTS is a deep study of Greater Rochester's bus system, initiated by RTS' operater, the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority. When the project is complete, RGRTA will have a recommendations for near-future changes to the local transit system. Consultants will prepare recommended bus route structures as part of that process.
Tuesday's meeting is presented by Rochester People's Climate Coalition (RPCC), Reconnect Rochester, the Rochester Cycling Alliance, Metro Justice, Mothers Out Front, and the Community Design Center of Rochester. The "Meeting in a Box" format is designed to help groups articulate their wants, needs, and vision for the transit system to RGRTA and its consultants.

In a press release announcing the meeting, the RPCC included its recommendations for RTS.  Among them: increasing ridership by making bus service more frequent, avoiding further expansion into outlying areas as a way of encouraging employers to locate jobs near the city core, committing to an all-electric bus fleet by 2027, coordinating transit and land-use planning. The coalition also recommends that RTS develop and expand alternatives to full-size buses: using smaller buses on lines with lower use, expanding options such as van pooling, and coordinating with bike and car-share programs.
