Frank reviews 'The Hooperellas Spectacular'

by

The guys and dolls in 'The Hooperellas Spectacular' were so cool under fire they could get this whole Fringe caper re-named “The Fridge Fest.”

Despite what amounted to a shitstorm of technical snafus, the show must go on, and go on it did. Modeled after classic and sideshow burlesque (with a twist), The Hooperellas are much more than a torid bump ‘n’ grind display. They had a gal and her guitar conjure a ghostly St. Vincent. They sang songs and hoofed it to Benny Goodman's “Sing, Sing, Sing."

But it’s those hula hoops, boys and girls. The members of the troupe each handled their hoop with nimble dexterity and lightning speed. And they still managed some tongue-in-cheek peel and squeal with a sexified dance to “Twerkin’ In The Rain.” Oh, and in keeping with the classic burlesque that feeds my fevered brain, the finale featured boobs covered in glitter. Funny, nobody wore any fringe.

Catch "The Hooperellas Spectacular" again Saturday, September 15,  at 5 p.m. at The Lyric Theatre: Cabaret Hall. $15, appropriate for ages 18 and older.
