FOLK | Tough Old Bird

From Fillmore, New York in Allegany County, Tough Old Bird is a folk project painting impressionistic tones of pastoral scenes. The duo — brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan — is robustly reflective in its songwriting, however gentle it is in its performances. Sonically, there is an appreciation of classic folk artists like Pete Seeger and Roy Harper, as well as modern inspiration from the likes of Great Lake Swimmers, Iron & Wine, and The Milk Carton Kids. The sincere, pensive tone of their naturalistic aesthetic and the implicit underpinning of mysticism are understated and even uncharacteristic at nightlife venues these days. Chicago-based Ratboys will be returning with the fetching appeal of 90's pop-rock and a penchant for emotional resiliency. Singer Julia Steiner's voice floats atop the four-piece band's sturdy gallop with the tender conviction of Gin Blossoms or Amanda Bergman. Local progressive indie rock band Fowls will also support.

Tough Old Bird supports Ratboys on Wednesday, April 24, 8 p.m. at Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue. $8-$10. 454-2966.;
