FOLK POP | Oh, Cassius!

by

Blending haunting vocal harmonies with acoustic guitar and percussion, Oh, Cassius! sounds both familiar and new. The duo trots into Rochester off the energy of its debut EP, "On Such A Full Sea Are We Now Afloat," released October 14. Shortly into "Carpenter," the first track on the EP, you might hear vocals reminiscent of Marcus Mumford and the pulsing four-to-the-floor kick drum so omnipresent these days. Then you begin to hear what the duo stand on: tight vocal harmonies and a filled-out folk-pop sound from an impressive group of musicians the duo collaborated with for the album — including Dave Eggar, cellist of Coldplay's 2008 "Viva La Vida." The duo — John Torres, formerly of various indie folk projects, and Meredith Dimenna, past fronter of the rock band Saint Bernadette — came together in Black Rock, Connecticut in 2012. Barely a year later, they won 2013's "Best Other" in the Connecticut Music Awards. They're doing something right.

Oh, Cassius! plays on Friday, November 7, at Abilene Bar & Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way. 9 p.m. $5. Abilenebarandlounge.com; ohcassius.com.
