You wouldn't guess it if you've been indoctrinated by any of the country music currently polluting the airwaves, but the genre has a rich history steeped in resistance and the political. Zora Acephala understands this to a masterful degree, and her project, Her Dad's Banjo, is at once a celebration of country and folk music's rebellious spirit and the enduring power of the deeply personal. Through playing literally her dad's banjo, Zora is able to capture something powerfully immaterial, and the results are nothing short of captivating.
Her Dad's Banjo will play with Condition Oakland, Kaiser Solzie, The Stranger's, and The Drowning Cowboys on Thursday, February 8, at The Vineyard Community Space, 836 South Clinton Avenue. 6 p.m. $5 suggested donation. facebook.com/vineyardcommunityspace; facebook.com/zorabanjo.
