In 1685, the Baroque style was fully established, and composers such as Henry Purcell, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Arcangelo Corelli, and Marc-Antoine Charpentier were the most prominent composers of Europe. It was also the year in which Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel were born. By the early 18th century, the music of Bach and Handel became the basis for the standard performing repertoire – then, as well as now.
