Who says you need Beethoven or Brahms to put on a piano trio concert? Six female musicians join forces to present an uncommonly interesting concert this Friday at SUNY Brockport. The musicians are three well-known local performers: violinist Pia Liptak, the concertmaster of Cordancia; cellist Joan Kinsella, co-chair of Hochstein's string department; and pianist Doleen Hood, who teaches at Hochstein. And since women not only play piano trios but have also written them, "TRIO ... She Wrote" will offer a very original program featuring three female composers. Contemporary composers are represented by the very popular Jennifer Higdon's 2003 Piano Trio, a piece exploring the connections between painting and music. The other works are by women who were quite celebrated during their lifetimes but neglected after death: Piano Trio No. 2 in G Minor by the American Romantic, Amy Beach, whose music has had a comeback in recent years; and a real rarity, a trio by the Swedish organist and composer Elfreda Andrée (1841-1929), a musician so prominent in her native country that she had a music school named after her.
"TRIO ... She Wrote" will be performed Friday, February 5, 7:30 p.m., at Tower Fine Arts Center, The College at Brockport, 180 Holley Street. fineartstix.brockport.edu.
