Classical | Society for Chamber Music in Rochester

The violinist Richard Luby (1945-2013) co-founded the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester in 1976. He served as its music director and performed with it frequently during his years in Rochester, where he also played with the second violins of the RPO. He had a wide repertoire, but was most associated with the sonatas and partitas of J.S. Bach, so it's fitting that the Society's tribute concert to Luby this Sunday afternoon features music of the Baroque era. "Trio Sonata No.5" by the imaginative Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka is bracketed by pieces from J.S. Bach: the sublime "Chaconne" from the solo violin partita in D Minor, played by RPO concertmaster Juliana Athayde, and sinfonias from six Bach cantatas, played by a small chamber ensemble with Peter Dubois at the organ.

The Society for Chamber Music in Rochester performs Sunday, October 13, 4:30 p.m. at Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs St., $30,
