In its season-opening concert, the Rochester Oratorio Society will present two of classical music's most cherished melody makers in a sacred context. Led by Artistic Director Eric Townell, the ROS will sing Schubert's Mass in G, as well as Mendelssohn's Cantata from "Hymn of Praise." Here, Schubert's gift for emotional immediacy and vibrant harmonic language adds musical poignancy to the liturgy, while the "Hymn of Praise" by Mendelssohn features the composer's effervescent lyricism and meticulously beautiful orchestration. The program also includes the spellbinding "Luminous Night of the Soul" by contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.
Rochester Oratorio Society will perform on Friday, October 12, 7:30 p.m. at Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Avenue. $10-$25. 473-2234. rossings.org.
