Pegasus Early Music gets its 2017-18 season off to a splendid start with a musical birthday party for one of the great figures in Western music: composer Claudio Monteverdi, born in 1567 and died 1643. Pegasus Artistic Director Deborah Fox calls the program "an unabashed personal selection of some of my favorite pieces by my favorite composer." That rich selection includes numerous Monteverdi madrigals, which range in tone from the passionate and the bellicose to the merely sublime (and which require virtuoso singing, too). They'll be complemented by a few instrumental pieces by younger contemporaries of Monteverdi, like Biagio Marini and Dario Castello. Fox will take part as a lutenist, and will be joined by a large group of favorite Pegasus musicians, including soprano Laura Heimes and mezzo-soprano Virginia Warnken (pictured). A reception follows — with birthday cake.
Pegasus Early Music will perform "Monteverdi's 450th" on Sunday, October 22, at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 212 North Fitzhugh Street. 4 p.m. (preconcert talk at 3:15 p.m.) $10-$25. 703-3990; pegasusearlymusic.org.
