Nearly two-dozen pianists, from eight countries, and ranging from ages 15 to 18, will travel to Rochester to publically display their talents at the 14th Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition. First, second, and third place winners will receive cash prizes, and a full-tuition scholarship to the Eastman School of Music.
Piano department chair Douglas Humpherys founded this competition in 1997 and will serve as artistic director for this year's competition administration board. Several previous winners will return to give performances, including the 2014 Gina Bachauer International Gold Medalist, Andrey Gugnin, and 2010 Eastman Piano Competition Silver Medalist Yen-Yu Chen.
An opening concert featuring Gugnin will take place Sunday, July 12, 3 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs Street). Tickets are $10-$20. The competition's preliminary rounds will take place Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16; 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and are free to attend.
The competition's final round will take place Saturday, July 18, in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre (60 Gibbs Street). Finalists will perform with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 7:30 p.m. $25. esm.rochester.edu.
