Rochester's undisputed heavyweight champion of the blues, Joe Beard, has had the blues for 80 years now. Born in Mississippi, Beard moved to sweet home Rochester in 1956 when today's bluesmen were still in wet pants. Beard has set the blues bar in blues bars high enough to consider Rochester a blue town. Next Wednesday, he'll perform an intimate show at Downstairs Cabaret, and later this month (Sunday, April 29), Beard will play a birthday show in his honor at Photo City Improv (543 Atlantic Avenue), thrown by blues guitarist extraordinaire Steve Grills and featuring special guest John Ellison of the legendary Soul Brother Six.
Joe Beard and Bill Downen play as part of the Rochester Folkus series on Wednesday, April 11, at the Downstairs Cabaret, 20 Windsor Street. 7 p.m. $10. downstairscabaret.com; facebook.com/joebeardblues.
