WEEK AHEAD: Union protests Monroe Developmental Center closure

by

Union representatives will hold a press conference on Friday, March 8, to draw attention to state plans to close the Monroe Developmental Center. A notice of the press conference was included in a local labor e-mail newsletter sent out last week.

Monroe Developmental Center is a residential facility for people with developmental disabilities. The state plans to close the center at the end of the year; the facility’s workers are represented by the Public Employees Federation. Last year, local media reported that the facility has about 125 residents and that the state plans to move at least some of them to group homes or other residential centers in the state.

The closure is part of a state effort to de-institutionalize care for people with developmental disabilities.

The press conference will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Rochester police Locust Club, 1425 Lexington Avenue. Jeremy Moule
