Of course Banzai Sushi & Cocktail Bar, by Piranha chef/owner Nic Grammatico, showcases sushi in the form of sashimi, nigiri, and torched tataki, along with a selection of creative maki. This cute eatery also offers soups and salads with Asian flavors, as well as a dim sum menu and daily specials, serving into the wee hours on weekend nights. Craft cocktails, beer, wine, and sake are available, and Banzai does Sunday brunch.
The cozy trattoria Rocco has just 13 tables, so making reservations even during the week is a smart idea. This way you’ll be assured of experiencing co-owner and chef Mark Cupolo’s faithful and inspired interpretation of Italian food, like expertly fired pizzas, fresh and seasonal salads, generous helpings of pasta, carefully prepared meat and fish entrées, and rustic desserts. Even the wine list is utterly and completely Italian.
Good Luck opened in 2008, repurposing a high-ceilinged retail warehouse space, and quickly made a name for itself at the vanguard of Rochester’s craft cocktail and shared plates movements. The atmosphere is hip and skews slightly upscale, the food served largely family style, even in the case of Good Luck’s mammoth burger. Chef and co-owner Dan Martello’s menu changes along with the seasons, its constants including pizza and charcuterie. Across the street is Good Luck’s good-sized garden, which supplies the kitchen with exceptionally fresh produce.
