The South Wedge Diner is, as you might have guessed, a diner, which means not much in the way of ambience but fast, decent, and nicely priced grub. So you’ve got your big breakfasts, including several variations on eggs benedict, along with soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and a bunch of comfort-food entrées. But there’s also beer and wine, as well as an impressive roster of pan-Asian cuisine, with Thai and Vietnamese primarily represented.

The original location of The Beale has anchored the intersection of South and Gregory since 1998, and in 2011 it was reinvented from a barbecue joint into a “New Orleans Grille & Bar.” That complex mélange of French, Caribbean, and African influences is evident in favorites like gumbo, jambalaya, po’ boys, mudbugs, muffaletta, and étouffée. There are also a variety of Delta-fied sandwiches, salads, and entrées, as well as a bit of barbecue.

Of course Banzai Sushi & Cocktail Bar, by Piranha chef/owner Nic Grammatico, showcases sushi in the form of sashimi, nigiri, and torched tataki, along with a selection of creative maki. This cute eatery also offers soups and salads with Asian flavors, as well as a dim sum menu and daily specials, serving into the wee hours on weekend nights. Craft cocktails, beer, wine, and sake are available, and Banzai does Sunday brunch.
Baker Street Bakery supplies breads, pizza dough, and desserts to many of Rochester’s most popular eateries. But feel free to eliminate the middle man with a visit to Baker Street’s own retail space, where you’ll find those restaurant favorites as well as a wide array of freshly baked breads (like a stellar sourdough), rolls, cookies, bars, cakes, pies, and breakfast pastries. Custom orders available, and Pittsford Dairy milk, too!
Housed in a lovely restored brick building with a fairytale turret, the upscale Bamba Bistro sits apart, both literally and figuratively, from its neighbors across Alexander Street’s Restaurant Row. The menu reflects the seasons, with a variety of salads and starters, such as Bamba Bistro’s signature French gnocchi, as well as pasta, seafood, poultry, and beef. And don’t forget about dessert!
