1888 in America: William Trost Richards’ Seascape Contextualized

Through Dec. 6. This exhibition situates William Trost Richards painting at a particular juncture in American history. “Seascape” was created during the height of America’s Gilded Age (1876-1900). This was a period of expansion that included continental westward expansion, imperial expansion into the South Pacific (the Philippine Archipelago), and the Caribbean (after the Spanish American War and the purchase of Spain’s colonies).
