Week ahead: Events for the week of Monday, February 29
Peace Islands Institute, Nazareth College, and SUNY Geneseo will present two events examining Islamic extremism on Wednesday, March 2.
The first, “Combatting Extremism Cancer,” is a talk given by Hakan Yesilova, chief editor of Fountain Magazine. Yesilova speak at SUNY Geneseo’s MacVittie College Union at 12:30 p.m.
Later that day, Nazareth College’s Hickey Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue will host “ISIS Theology of Violence and Counter Theology in Islam,” a discussion in which Yesilova will be joined by Thomas Gibson, professor of anthropology at the University of Rochester, and Sharon Murphy, professor of political science at Nazareth.
The second event will be held in Naz’s Otto Shults Community Center, at 7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
ColorBrightonGreen.Org will show the documentary film “Triple Divide” on Wednesday, March 2. The film, which was directed by Joshua Pribanic and Melissa Troutman and narrated by actor Mark Ruffalo, is often described as presenting all sides of the fracking debate factually. The film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. at the Brighton Memorial Library, 2300 Elmwood Avenue.
Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library will present “Gun Violence and Gun Control: Where Do We Go from Here?” on Tuesday, March 1.
Peter Read, retired US Air Force officer and charter board member of the Virginia Tech Family Outreach Foundation, and Gary Pudup, Rochester regional coordinator of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, are the featured speakers.
Read’s 19-year-old daughter was killed during the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings, the deadliest mass shooting in US history. Pudup is a retired police officer. The event will be held at the Central Library’s Kate Gleason Auditorium, 115 South Avenue, from 12:12 p.m. to 12:52 p.m.
The social activist group Enough is Enough will show the documentary film “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners,” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1. The film examines Angela’s influence as a college professor and activist, as well as her skirmishes with the FBI. The film will be shown at the Flying Squirrel Community Space, 285 Clarissa Street. The Rochester City School District will hold two community forums concerning the $1.2 billion schools modernization program on Thursday, March 3. The first forum will be held at 5:30 p.m. at School 15 about that school’s plan for remodeling. The meeting will be held at 595 Upper Falls Boulevard. The second meeting will involve the plans for School 22’s remodeling. The meeting will be held at 950 Norton Street at 7 p.m.
The Monroe County Planning Board will hold a public information meeting on the county’s proposed capital improvement program for 2017-2022 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, at Monroe Community Hospital, auditorium A, 435 E. Henrietta Road. Park in Lot 1 and use the Friendship Entrance.
The meeting is to provide information about which capital projects the county plans to undertake over the next six years, to get public input about how the projects relate to community and neighborhood plans, and to learn of additional needs not addressed by the CIP.
