Well, this is where we're at, I guess.

Donald Trump was spouting his usual anti-immigrant rhetoric during a campaign stop yesterday, when security personnel ejected a Black Lives Matter protester. Here's how media reports describe what happened next: one person in the crowd yelled to set the protester — only he called the person a "motherfucker" — on fire, another yelled "He's a Muslim," and another guy yelled "Sieg heil."

That behavior is appalling. At best, the remarks show utter disrespect for a person or groups of people, at worst they show an utter disrespect for a person's life. Trump himself encourages these disgusting displays, since his campaign embraces xenophobia and flirts with nativism; if Trump didn't constantly stir up and embrace existing anti-Muslim sentiment, a crowd member might not have yelled out "He's a Muslim" as a smear against the protester.

Anti-Muslim rhetoric is a general problem right now, not just at Trump rallies, and thankfully, community leaders are starting to push back. Locally, the Monroe County Bar Association issued a statement condemning such speech. Here's its statement:

“The Board of Trustees of the Monroe County Bar Association condemns divisive and angry speech directed at our brothers and sisters in the Islamic community, or otherwise distorts our nation’s perception of an entire American religious or ethnic community. In fact, such speech violates our most sacred principles as a nation born in religious tolerance, committed to the rule of law and rooted in justice for all. Our collective experience as attorneys in America teaches us that silence in response to such unjustified and intemperate speech corrodes our nation’s values of justice, fairness and due process, and only encourages the enemies of freedom and liberty.

"As attorneys, we condemn violence against all and unwarranted, hateful speech directed against our fellow Americans and their families.”
