By the end of the week, Monroe County voters should have a sense of which candidates may face primaries in September.
Today through Thursday, candidates can turn in petitions to the
Monroe County Board of Elections. Anyone who runs for an office without the party’s designation needs to file petitions, though many candidates still file even if they already have their party’s backing.
Some Democrats expect primaries in key city seats. In March, the city’s 23rd Legislative District Committee picked
former Rochester police chief James Sheppard to run for
County Legislature; the seat is currently held by Paul Haney, who can’t run for re-election due to term limits. But
Mitch Rowe, now the city’s director of buildings and parks, also sought the nomination. Rowe hasn’t said whether he’ll primary Sheppard.
Some in the party also expect a primary challenge against
Molly Clifford, the Democrats’ endorsed candidate for the Northwest District seat on
City Council. Incumbent Council member Carla Palumbo isn’t running again.

The
Flying Squirrel Community Space will show “COINTELPRO” at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 6.
The documentary film reveals the US government’s history and continuing efforts to repress and foil progressive movements. The film illustrates how efforts to liberate black, Latino, Asian, and indigenous people have been stalled by institutionalized racism.
A Q&A will follow the film, which will be shown at 285 Clarissa Street.
