This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. All are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Play to dramatize students' plight
The Rochester City School District will present "Breaking the School to Prison Pipeline," a play by Robert Ricks at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. The play focuses on the voices of students trying to navigate a public school system that isn't supporting them. The play will be shown at Franklin High School, 950 Norton Street. Tickets are $20.
Watch Night will be brought back to life at Naz
Nazareth College will sponsor the historical re-enactment of "Watch Night of December 31, 1862" at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18. The event took place the night before President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and became a religious service of special significance to African Americans. The re-enactment will feature performers from AKWAABA, the Heritage Associates' living history performers, at the Nazareth Arts Center.
Activists will prepare you for direct action
The Flying Squirrel Community Space will host "Nonviolent Direct Action Training" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 19. The training is part of Take Back the Land Rochester's efforts to help people avoid bank foreclosure-related evictions and stay in their homes. The training will be held at the Flying Squirrel, 285 Clarissa Street.
You can enroll in the ACA at the library
Monroe County residents interested in enrolling in the New York State Health Care Exchange for health care insurance as a result of the Affordable Care Act can do so through the public libraries. Navigators (people who assist with enrollment) from LawNY and Coordinated Care Services will be at 11 library sites through January 2016. The navigators are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents will need to provide their most recent tax return documentation, identification, Social Security number, and birth date for every family member they wish to enroll.
