Slut Walk is an international event that originated in Toronto, Canada in 2011 and takes place annually to bring communities together around the issues of sexual harassment and violence. The original Slut Walk was held in response to a statement made by a Toronto police officer: “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized”. Statements like these place support on the common misconception that women have control over being victimized and are ultimately responsible for being raped.
