Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez might sometimes forget which moniker they are performing under. The two have gone through tenures with At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta together, and their latest project, Antemasque, proves the third band's the charm. The prog-rock sound is still in full force, with Bixler's Geddy Lee-esque vocals and Rodriguez's speedy, heavy guitar riffing — the band's single "Hanging In the Lurch" especially highlights these traits. The two multi-band journeymen were joined by The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea on bass — though he is not part of the group — for the whole of Antemasque's upcoming album, and the star power produces a powerful first effort.
Antemasque plays with Le Butcherettes on Wednesday, November 12, at The Club @ Water Street, 204 North Water Street. 8 p.m. $18-$23. antemasque.com; waterstreetmusic.com
