LITERATURE | R. Sikoryak's "Terms and Conditions"

There are easy tricks to keep someone from reading a contract: make the legal language even harder to slosh through by printing or posting it in all caps with no paragraph breaks. We've all encountered this when agreeing to the terms of using different social media apps, and most of us, eyes glazed over, rush to just hit "agree." New Yorker cartoonist R. Sikoryak's latest graphic novel, "Terms and Conditions," cleverly addresses this, by adapting iTunes' entire 20,699-word user agreement into easily digestible bits. Each page explores the contract with an homage to a different iconic comic or graphic novel, including "Josie and the Pussycats," "Persepolis," and "Peanuts." This work follows Sikoryak's other graphic novel adaptations of lengthy classic literature, including a Dostoyevsky/Batman mashup, and Dante's "Inferno" illustrated in the style of Bazooka Joe.

Sikoryak's book tour hits Rochester on Wednesday, April 12, 4 p.m., with a slideshow presentation and book signing at RIT's Bamboo Room in the Student Alumni Union (1 Lomb Memorial Drive). The event is free and open to the public. For more info, visit events.rit.edu or contact Daniel Worden at dxwind@rit.edu.
