CLASSICAL | Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra

by

In these final days of this reluctant spring, head over to Gibbs Street for the final RPO concert of the season featuring Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." The other tried-and-true classic on the program will be the Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3 in D Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 30, featuring up-and-coming pianist Leonardo Colafelice. City covered Colafelice when he snagged the gold medal at the 2012 Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition, and since then he's gone on to win the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition, and others. But what sells the concert for me is the premiere of a four-movement work titled "Finding Rothko" by American composer Adam Schoenberg (b. 1980). Schoenberg's website has audio clips of the work, and it sounds as if it will be as disquieting as the titular artist's canvases.

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performs Thursday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. and again Saturday, June 1, at 8 p.m. at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs St. $15-$82, $10 students. 454-2100, RPO.org.
