BLUES | Selwyn Birchwood

by

Though he isn't from Chicago, guitarist and vocalist Selwyn Birchwood is the embodiment of the city's brand of blues. His intense lead guitar playing, with its dirty tone, is equivalent to an out-of-body-experience, and combined with his rough, gritty, perfect-for-blues voice you'd think you were listening to a blues legend. Lyrically, the music will resonate with anyone who has had a bad day — "Lord I feel so fine baby, wash my worries in wine" — and the guitar should resonate with, well, just about anyone who appreciates good music. Selwyn and his band bested 125 others across the country last year to win the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, and Birchwood won the Albert King Guitarist of the Year award as well. If you missed the band at this year's Jazz Fest, here's another chance.

Selwyn Birchwood plays on Monday, August 25, at Abilene Bar and Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way. 8 p.m. $10-$15. Abilenebarandlounge.com; Selwynbirchwood.com.
