Ad nauseated

by

A week ago, I wrote an article, "Ad Nauseam," about the outside groups that are spending hefty sums on ads in two local Congressional races.

This morning, the Buffalo News published an article detailing the independent spending in the race between Democrat Kathy Hochul and Republican Chris Collins. The numbers are astonishing. The News says outside groups have spent $2 million on the race.

That total doesn't include the candidates' own fund-raising and spending; their quarterly reports are due Monday, October 15. The News says Hochul is expected to report raising approximately $730,000 this quarter.

Outside groups will easily top their spending totals from the 2011 special election that put Hochul in office. The Sunlight Foundation, which tracks Congressional campaign spending, says the groups spent $2.4 million in that election. As the election gets closer, the groups and the campaigns will almost surely air more ads.
