In the Genesee Country that gave birth to Rochester, Austin Steward, is “Founding Father of Afro-Rochester; a generation later, Frederick Douglass’s intelligence and drive, elevates crowns him, “principal abolitionist.” Even before war cannons roared, both men suffer personal casualties. Chattel slavery always exacted personal loss.
